Cells of the nervous system Flashcards

1
Q

What are the different parts of a neuron?

A

cell body (soma) - contains the nucleus
dendrites- ears of neuron, job is to receive info
initial segment (axon hillock) -determine whether action will be fired or not
axon ( presynaptic terminals)- releases neurotransmitter

Q

What are astrocytes? (CNS)

A

Maintain external environment for the neurons
Surround blood vessels and form blood brain barrier

Q

What are Schwann cells? (PNS)

A

wrap around axons , form myeline sheaf. Can only insulate one axon unlike oligodendrocytes

Q

What are satellite cells (PNS)?

A

supply nutrients to the surrounding neurons and also have some structural function.
