Erosion Flashcards
Wind:
Explanation/Example
Affect on sediment
Geologic features formed
Explanation/Example:
- Picks up loose sediment such as sand, silt and clay
- Occurs in deserts and beaches with little vegetation
Affect on sediment:
-Abraded rock and polishes them into smooth and angular shapes with potted surfaces
Geologic features formed:
Ventifacts
Water:
Explanation/Example
Affect on sediment
Geologic features formed
Explanation/Example: Streams -Predominant agent of erosion -Abraded sediment -Suspension, solution, traction and flotation
Affect of sediment:
-Abrades sediment as it carries them in the water, smooths out and rounds them
Geologic features formed:
- V-shaped valley forms due to stream flow, contour lines take on v-shape
- Sediments abrading stream, water moves fastest in the middle and Delta forms at end of stream
Glaciers:
Explanation/Example
Affect on sediment
Geologic features formed
Explanation/Example:
- A large mass of moving ice
- Moves tremendous amount of sediment and scours the land
Affect on sediment:
-Sediments unsorted and jagged with striations
Geologic features formed:
-Forms U-shaped valley
Stream Discharge:
Amount of water flowing in a stream
Stream Flow:
- Inner Curve
- Outer Curve
- Flows fastest in the center of stream just under the surface
- Downcuts here into the bedrock and creates a v-shape stream bed
Inner Curve:
Flows slower, so deposition is dominant, less water and there is more friction slowing the flow of the water
Outer Curve:
Flows faster, so erosion is dominant, water has a lot of energy that is directed to the outer bank
IDOE:
Inner Curve
Deposition
Outer Curve
Erosion
Gravity:
Explanation/Example
Affect on sediment
Geologic features formed
Explanation/Example:
Mass Wasting
-Due to gravity alone
-Landslides, mudflow, slump, earth flow, rock falls, hillside creep, avalanches
Affect on sediment:
-Jagged pile of unsorted sediment
Geologic features formed:
Talus
-unsorted sediment pile
