Clouds & Their Formation Flashcards
A cloud consists of?
Condensed water vapor, ice and dust (aerosols) (dust, pollen, sea salt bc water stuck to them)
Three Main Types of Clouds:
Cumulus
Stratus
Cirrus
Requirements for Cloud Formation:
Condensation Nuclei
Saturated air
Condensation Nuclei:
Small suspended particles or aerosols which the water vapor condenses on (dust, pollen, sea salt)
Sublimation:
Solid to gas (skip liquid)
Deposition:
Gas to solid
Evapotranspiration:
Plants give off water as waste
Steps in Cloud Formation:
1) As air rises it expands (less pressure on it bc air is thinner)
2) Air cools without any energy input (adiabatically)
3) It reaches dew point and the water vapor condenses
Sinking air:
Compresses and warms
What can form if the atmospheric temperature is below 0c?
Ice crystals
Dew:
Water condenses on ground surface
Frost:
Water condenses and freezes on surface
Fog:
Cloud at ground level
When will it rain?
Water droplets coalesce (grow together) and get too heavy to stay in the air - so they fall as rain
Types of Precipitation:
Rain Drizzle Freezing rain Sleet Hail Snow
