Deposition Flashcards
Sorting of sediments:
Sediments will be sorted according to size in a stream (horizontal sorting)
Sediments in a pond are sorted by graded bedding/vertical sorting
Sand bars:
Build up of size sediments in a stream or ocean at a point where the water slows
Delta:
Fan shaped deposit where the stream enters a lake or the ocean at the point where the water slows and deposits material
What affects deposition?
- Particle size (bigger particles drop first)
- Particle shape (rounder particles drop first)
- Particle density (most dense particles drop first)
Glaciers:
Direct:
Glacial drift/till (unsorted)
Indirect:
Fluvio-galcial (from melted water, unsorted)
U-shape valley (sorted)
Life of a stream:
Youthful:
-Fast moving, steep gradient rapids
Mature:
-Slows down, gradual decrease in gradient, flood plains begin to develop
Old Age:
-Very slow, large, carries much sediment, oxbow lakes, meanders, big flood plains
