Ergogenic Aids Flashcards
What are Ergogenic aid
Substances or phenomena that are work-producing and believed to increase performance
Amphetamines
Catecholamine like effect (sympathomimetic)- cause increased arousal and perception of increased energy or self-confidence
How are the extended time to exhaustion effects caused with amphetamines?
They mobilize free fatty acids, spare muscle glycogen and interfere with signals of fatigue
What subjects are amphetamines most likely to improve performance in?
In fatigued subjects only; no improvement in alert
How does caffeine effect fatigue
Decreased perception of fatigue and lower RPE during prolonged exercise
How does caffeine affect the muscles?
Improved performance at the muscle or nervous system or the delivery of fuel to muscle
What does caffeine do to blood glucose
It elevates blood glucose and increases fat utilization
Anabolic steroids effect on muscle mass
Initial studies showed no benefit for developing muscle mass
What happens after you stop anabolic steroids
Revert to normal after discontinuation + side effects
What do red blood cells carry
Oxygen carrying protein hemoglobin
How does blood doping work
Infusion of RBC’s to increase hemoglobin concentration and the oxygen carrying capacity of blood
Erythropoietin
Hormone that stimulated RBC production; can lead to extremely high rbc’s and death of athletes
Athlete biological passport
Process of tracking international level athletes by monitoring biomarkers to determine doping
Carbon monoxide role in hemoglobin
200-300 times greater affinity for hemoglobin compared to oxygen. Can be used to monitor hemoglobin
How can you most accurately describe the relationship between VO2 max and hemoglobin?
By measuring hemoglobin mass rather than just hemoglobin concentration
