Epoetin DI Flashcards
What stimulates erythropoietin synthesis?
Hypoxia
Where is erythropoietin synthesized?
Primarily in the kidneys
Is epo an endogenous or exogenous CSF?
Endogenous
What does epo do after it binds to its receptor?
Promotes proliferation, differentiation, and survival of the erythroid progenitors
Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents (ESA) MoA
Act similarly to endogenous eco and stimulates erythroid progenitors to differentiate and mature into RBCs
ESA drugs
Epoetin-Alfa (Procrit) and Darbepoetin-Alfa (Aranesp)
MoA of ESA drugs
Stimulate BFU-E and CFU-E in bone marrow to proliferate and differentiate to mature RBCs and increase oxygen capacity
What happens to oxygen capacity when more reticulocytes are produced and released into the blood?
The oxygen capacity increases
Epoetin-Alfa brand name
Procrit
Darbepoetin-Alfa brand name
Aranesp
Indication for ESAs
Anemia from Stage 4 CKD and ESRD
Zidovudine-treated HIV
Chemo-associated anemia
ADEs of ESAs
