Epithelium Flashcards
What are the characteristics of the epithelium?
Cellular
A vascular
Lines, covers, and forms glands
Barrier membrane
Rests on a basement membrane
Most are mitotically active
Continuous sheets of cells held together by cell junctions
What are the epithelial functions? (8)
Mechanical protection of underlying tissue
Protection against dehydration
Selective absorption
Secretion and lubrication
Digestion
Transport
Excretion
Reproduction
What are the 2 major characteristics of naming the lining of the epithelia?
- Number of cell layers
- Height8 and shape of the cells at the apical surface
Simple
Function?
1 cell layer
Function: exchange
Stratified
Function?
2 or more cell layers
Function is protective
Pseudostratified
1 layer with cells lying on the basement membrane, but it appears to have several layers
It often has an apical surface modification
Squamous
Flat cells with bulging nuclei
Cuboidal
Box like cell with round, central nuclei
Columnar
Cells that are taller than they are wide
Transitional
Cells at apical surface change shape when the lumen is full or empty (only in the urinary system)
Function is to stretch without tearing and to allow/disallow passage of molecules into/out of the urine
Microvilli and Stereocilia
Function to increase surface area for exchange
Found in striated border of intestines and brush the border of the kidney
Stereocilia are found in the epididymis
Cilia and flagella
Located on the apical surface which line the trachea and Fallopian tubes
9+2 arrangement of micro tubules
Motile
