Adrenal Gland Flashcards
Parts of the adrenal gland
Capsule, cortex, medulla, sinusoids
Three zones of the cortex and where they are
Zona multiformis (glomerulus; outermost)
Zona fasiculata (middle)
Zona reticularis (innermost)
Describe cells of the zona glomerulosa/multiformis
Columnar cells arranged in an arc-like formation with convexity near the capsule
Describe the zona fasiculata
Consists of cuboidal or columnar cells arranged in radial cords
Numerous vacuoles that once contained lipid can be seen in fasiculata cells
Describe zona reticularis
Consists of anastomosing cords of cells that contain fewer lipid vacuoles
Describe characteristics of the medulla
Granular cytoplasms of cells
Central vein present
Neurons can be found scattered of the autonomic nervous system
Since the cells of the medulla and cortex interdigitate, what may be amongs the chromaffin cells
Projections of the zona reticularis
Describe the adrenal gland of the chicken
Lack of organization
Cords of cortical cells in pink are mixed with cords of medullary cells in purple
A rich capillary or arteriole/venule supply is evident and ganglion is present at one pole
