A
An infection of the epiglottis and surrounding tissues that can cause sudden and critical narrowing of the airways.

What organisms cause epiglottitis?
A
Haemophilus influenza
Strep
Staph
Viral

What might clinical findings be?
A
Fever is usually first. Adults have sore throat and odynophagia. adenopathy anterior neck beef-red pharynx dyspnia, tachypnea, stridor

How is diagnosis made?
A
Hx and appearance
CBC w/ elevated WBC

Treatments for epiglottitis?
A
Airway management is priority intervention.
Emergency room referral.
IV antibiotics broad spectrum
