A
Disruption of the outermost layer of the cornea, the epithelium by either chemical or mechanical means.
Common in contact lens wearers
Active young people

Diagnostic Studies
A
Assess visual acuity
Fluorescein staining - after penlight and fundus exam.

Treatments
A
Non-Pharm - NS to irrigate, eye patch to decrease pain and speed healing.
Pharmacologic - antibiotic ointment drops 5-7 days
analgesics for pain
Referral to ophthalmologist if injury
Follow-up 24 hours
