Epidemiology Flashcards
Prevalence -
the number of cases of a disease or condition per population at risk at a particular point in time.
Incidence -
the number of new cases of a disease or condition over a specified period of time.
Exam Q: prevelence of perio increases with
older individuals - 90% chance of 80 yr old having periodontitis. Not because 80yr old is more susceptible. This person got the disease at 40, and it is still measured. **Starts usually at 40.
Gist of it all: If it is causing pain,
fix it, it’s a health issue. If not, acknowledge any abnormalities and move on.
Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN)
Introduced by World Health Organization
Major advantages include simplicity, speed, reproducibility and uniformity
Can be used as part of a global surveillance system to compare periodontal health in differing countries
Provides information concerning the type of disease and therefore the extent of therapy
Not about asking whether or not a patient has disease. Your goal is to assess what treatment a patient needs.
PSR: CPITN: Mouth divided into
sextants defined by tooth numbers:
1–5, 6–11, 12–16, 17–21, 22–27, 28–32
Index teeth in each sextant probed and pocket depth, subgingival calculus and bleeding response determined
CIPTN probe
0.5 ball, 3mm, 2mm of colored probe.
Deep probing doens’t work on
mixed dentition.
PSR
perio screening and recording.
At least 1 in 10 patients will present with
severe periodontitis.
Localized AP
50 = sample size
Pop estimate = 67,000
0.2+-0.2%
Incidence of LAP is
1.3/1000 people at risk (14- to 15-year old)
Generalized AP
14 = sample size
Pop estimate = 16,781
0.13±0.07%
Incidental AL
175 = sample size
Pop estimate = 212,386
