Why is CPD important?
Helps you to achieve goals and continue to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours in your role, keeps knowledge up to date and ensures you can meet high standards of care
What is PDP useful for?
Helps you self evaluate and reflect on your training needs, and what skills you want to develop by doing CPD and training. Helps you work towards goals and how you will do this
How are appraisals useful?
Help identify strengths/weaknesses
Get feedback from professional colleagues
Can disclose any barriers and issues you are having
Can improve staff morale
Why do we gain valid consent
Ensures patient is fully aware of benefits and drawbacks of treatment and can make an informed decision
(Must be voluntary and informed to be valid)
The 5 key questions when providing care
Is it safe?
Is it effective?
Is it caring?
Is it responsive?
Is it well led?
How you assess risks and give example
Risk assessment (identify, evaluate, control, record, review) - for example using acid etch in a composite is a hazard, understand both staff and patients could be at risk as it is corrosive to skin and could cause chemical burns, to reduce risk wear suitable PPE when handling and ensure only authorised persons use it near patients
How to maintain accurate patient records and why?
Make sure to update notes every time a patient is in, including personal details and med history
Important as dentist needs up to date case history of pt so if any other clinician sees them they know what is going on
Important so patients receive necessary, appropriate and safe treatment
What is scope of practice?
It shows the skills, knowledge and behaviours you have to carry out tasks safely, and shows what additional training you need to perform certain activities
Work within scope of practice to keep myself and others safe
Consequences of own actions and behaviours?
People can lose trust in you as a professional or the business as a whole if you act unprofessionally
Take accountability for own actions and admit mistakes so they can be learnt from
How I’ve dealt with an issue and solved it?
Working with dentist at old practice
She was not acting safely and I was not confident working with her as I felt she was unsure of what she was doing
Raised concerns with other team members and practice manager
Outcome was dentist was put with a more experienced nurse who could guide her effectively
Safety when taking radiographs
Everyone leaves room besides patient
Each machine has local rules
Follow IRR and IRMER guidance and report issues to RPS in practice
Only trained professionals press the exposure button
Only take X-rays if necessary and must be justified to keep risk ALARP
How to process radiographs accurately
We use digital, ensure I don’t damage the films when taking them out barrier envelope
Ensure device is on the correct patient before processing image
CPR for adults and children
30 compressions to 2 breaths for adults
Same for children but do 5 rescue breaths first
Shout for help
Ring 999
Get defibrillator
What you would do if someone wasn’t fit to practice?
Raise concerns with practice manager, and if it is not dealt with report concerns to GDC
Is my job as a dental professional to whistleblow
