What are some reasons for extracting teeth?
To relieve pain
To eliminate infection
Gross caries
Periodontal mobility
Improve aesthetics
Ortho reasons
What is vertical impaction?
Where the tooth is stuck in the ramus of the mandible
What is horizontal impaction?
Where the tooth is on its side
What is mesial impaction?
Where the tooth gets stuck on the distal surface of the tooth in front of the
Why might an implant be carried out?
To replace missing teeth to improve function and aesthetics in the mouth
Permanently closes a gap
Why is a labial fraenectomy carried out?
To close a midline diastema between the upper front incisors.
Done by cutting and removing part of the fraenum so the teeth can be moved to close the gap with ortho once healed
Why is a lingual fraenectomy done?
Usually done on tongue tied infants to help free the tongue so they can move it about and feed
Why might a biopsy be taken?
If patient has persistent symptoms such as white or red patches in mouth, ulceration, lumps, radiographic abnormalities
What does a biopsy show?
Shows if a disease is present and helps to identify if it is benign, malignant or pre-malignant
Why might retained roots be removed?
To remove risk of infection, or if they are causing the patient pain
Why might an impacted tooth be removed?
Pericoronitis, can be a food trap, making it difficult to clean and can cause gum disease or caries
Why might an operculectomy be carried out?
If the patient doesn’t want the tooth removed, or if removing it will pose a risk of nerve damage
Removing the operculum can make the area easier to clean
What is the purpose of raising a mucoperiosteal flap and bone removal during MOS?
Helps gain access to the tooth and improve visibility
Bone removal helps the tooth to move and be released from the bone as safely as possible without causing damage to surrounding nerves
Why do post op instructions need to be followed?
To reduce the risk of infection and help the healing process of the sockets and surrounding tissues. Can cause a dry socket if blood clot is disturbed
How can nerve damage occur?
When administering LA, when removing lower teeth as roots can be close to inferior dental nerve
