Enzymes pt2 Flashcards
homeostasis
the ability to maintain a steady-state of equilibrium despite changing environmental conditions
Feedback inhibition/ Negative feedback
the inhibition of enzyme activity in a metabolic pathway by the final product
final product switches off the pathway
Precursor Activity
when the initial reactant (substrate) builds up, it can bind to the enzyme in a pathway and speed up the reaction
Allosteric Activation
when an activator binds to the regulatory site of an inactive enzyme and makes it active
Allosteric Inhibition
when an inhibitor binds to the regulatory site of an active enzyme and makes it inactive
ATP
- Adenosine triphosphate
- form of chemical potential energy
- cells basic unit of energy storage
ADP
- Adenosine diphosphate
- like a discharged battery thats rechargeable
- a lower form of chemical potential energy
Phosphorylation
the addition of one or more phosphates to a molecule
ADP + P + energy = ATP
Dephosphorylation
the removal of one or more phosphates from a molecule
ATP = ADP + P + energy
Oxidation
When an atom/molecule LOSES electrons in a chemical reaction
Reduction
When an atom/molecule GAINS electrons in a chemical reaction
Electron transport system
- system composed of stronger electron acceptors
- when an electron is transferred, energy is released
