Circulation: Heart Flashcards
what are the key parts of the circulatory system
- heart-muscular pump that circulates blood
- blood vessels- tubes that transport blood
- blod
Pericardium
a fluid-filled sack that protects and encloses the heart and hold it in place
Aorta
the largest artery in the body. carries blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body
superior vena cava
a large vein that collects blood from veins in the head and arms and transports it to the right atrium
inferior vena cava
a large vein that collects blood from the veins in the trunk and legs and transports it into the right atrium
right atrium
upper right chamber that collects deoxygenated blood from the vena cava and contracts to force the blood into the right ventricle
left atrium
upper left chamber that collects oxygenated blood from the pulmonary vein and contracts to force the blood into the left ventricle
right ventricle
muscular chamber that contracts to force blood into the pulmonary artery which then goes to the lungs
left ventricle
largest muscular chamber that contracts to force blood into the aorta which then goes to the rest of the body
Tricuspid Valve
3 flapped valve that closes to prevent blood from flowing back into the right atrium while the right ventricle contracts
bicuspid valve
2 flapped valve that closes to prevent blood from flowing back into the left atrium while the left ventricle contracts
pulmonary artery
artery that carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
pulmonary vein
vein that carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
coronary arteries
arteries that branch off the aorta to provide oxygenated blood to the heart tissue
pulmonary semilunar valve
valve at the mouth of the pulmonary arteries which prevents backflow of blood into the r.ventricle
