-Comes from the Latin word “clamare” which means to cry out, shout
-(In literature) a statement that asserts something to be true and can either be a fact or a judgment
Claim
=Center around a critical analysis of the text
=Posits whether something is true or untrue, but there must always be the potential for controversy, conflict and conversion
=The sun is shining today is not a claim of fact, but signs and symptoms of a medical emergency can be, as well as a defendant accused of a crime
=Must be specific as to time, place, people involved, and situation.
Claim of Fact
=Involve interpretations of the text to determine what is good, bad, pleasing, etc
=Once you have your definitions, claims of value are easier to understand because of the many interpretations of those definitions
=Examine your topic in terms of the phrases, “it is better to…, it is unethical that…, it is wrong to…, …is more beautiful than
=Involve judgments, appraisals, and evaluations
=Also involve “taste” in art, literature, music, film, food etc
Claim of Value
=Could involve a new procedure regarding the text, awarding prizes, or making this interpretation part of some pedagogy
=Are often procedural, organized plans
Claim of Policy
-Place the author(s) and date(s) in parentheses at an appropriate place in or at the end of a sentence
-Ex. Researchers have pointed out that the lack of trained staff is a common barrier to providing adequate health education (Fisher, 1999) and services (Weist & Christodulu, 2000).
Parenthetical Citation (Idea-focused)
-Place only the date in parenthesis
-Ex. Fisher (1999) recommended that health education be required for high school graduation in California.
Narrative Citation (Researcher-focused)
-Is any series of actions or events that are meant to achieve a particular result, like an advertising campaign of television commercials and Internet ads that tries to convince kids to buy bubble gum-flavored toothpaste

-It is the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal
-Is defined as any action that speaks in favor of, recommends, argues for a cause, supports or defends, or pleads on behalf of others
