Energy background Flashcards
Define ‘energy’
The capacity to perform, work and exist in chemical, potential and kinetic forms
What is food stored as?
Triglycerides, amino acids and glycogen
What is meant by when the food stores are ‘metabolised’
The chemical process within a cell which helps to maintain life by converting food stores into ATP
What is AdenosineTriPhosphate?
The body’s only usable source of energy
What is ATP broken down by?
ATPase breaks the double bond of ATP and releases energy
When ATP is broken down, what is created?
AdenosineDiPhosphate and phosphate
What type of reaction occurs when ATP is broken down?
Exothermic
How long does a molecule of ATP provide energy for?
2-3 seconds
How is ATP resynthesised?
ADP + P (endothermic reaction) requiring energy to form a high energy bond
Name the three energy systems
ATP-PC, Glycolytic and aerobic
What is the sarcoplasm?
The fluid within a muscle cell that stores PC, glycogen and myoglobin
What is a mole?
Unit of substance quantity
