Energy And Metabolism Flashcards
Kinetic energy
Work is used to push a ball up a ramp, kinetic energy of moving up the ramp is being stored in the potential energy of the balls position.
As the ball rolls down the ramp, it is converting the potential energy into kinetic energy. However, the conversion is not completely efficient, and some energy is lost as heat do to the friction between the ball ramp and air
Potential energy
A ball sitting at the top of the ramp has potential energy potential to do work
Types of work
Chemical
Transport
Mechanical
Chemical work
Making and breaking of chemical bonds
Enable cells and organisms to grow
Maintain a suitable internal environment and store information
Transport work
Cell movement through the cell membrane
Membranes of organelles in the cell
Mechanical work
For movement
Mediated by motor proteins of intracellular, fibers and filaments of the cytoskeleton
Chemical reactions
Extract energy, proteins, carbohydrates fats
Synthesize or break down molecules
Utilization or release of energy two ways
Catabolic break down large molecules and release energy
Anabolic energy utilization by synthesis of large molecules
Anaerobic versus aerobic
Anaerobic uses one glucose metabolized yields two ATP
Aerobic uses one glucose metabolized yields 30 to 32 ATP
Function of metabolism
Energy for all chemical processes
Conversion of food to fuel
Movement
Elimination of waste
Repair
