Endocrine System Pharmacology Flashcards
Block production of thyroid hormones in patients with hypersecretion disorders
Antithyroid agents
Inserts aquaporins (water channels) in the water nephron to treat hyponatremia; increases water excretion by kidney without increasing sodium excretion
Aquaretics
Although function of these hormones in body is to regulate carbohydrate metabolism, they also have a strong anti-inflammatory action; therefore are used to treat severe chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis
Corticosteroids
Hormone replacement therapy with human growth hormone in order to stimulate skeletal growth; used to treat children with abnormal short stature
Human growth hormone therapy
Replaces insulin for type 1 diabetics or treats sever type 2 diabetics
Insulin
Taken by mouth to cause decrease in blood sugar; not used for insulin-dependent patients
Oral hypoglycemic agents
Hormone replacement therapy for patients with hypothyroidism or who have had a thyroidectomy
