Endocrine System Flashcards
1
Q
Endocrine System
A
system of glands and associated organs that contain cells that produce hormones
2
Q
Main functions of Endocrine System
A
- regulation of body development
- interaction with nervous system to help regulate and coordinate body systems to promote homeostasis
3
Q
Lipid Soluble Hormones
A
- include steroid hormones (from cholesterol)
- bind with receptors within cytoplasm or nucleus; attach to DNA and activate certain proteins.
4
Q
Water Soluble Hormones
A
- peptide hormones
- bind with receptors on cell surface which activates a second molecule in cytoplasm which influences existing enzymes in cell
5
Q
Stimuli that cause production and release of hormones
A
- external signals from nervous system
- changes in nutrients, ions, etc.
- other hormones
6
Q
Neurosecretory Cells
A
specialized neurons that transmit and generate nerve impulses as well as secrete hormones
7
Q
Types of Interactions Between Hormones
A
- Antagonistic (have opposite effects)
- Synergistic (work together)
- Permissive (one needs the other to work)
