Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
A number of endocrine glands situated around the body, each of which is responsible for manufacturing, storing and releasing at least 1 hormone.
What sort of processes do hormones regulate?
Processes that require duration of action rather than speed of action.
How can hormone negative feedback go wrong?
Target cells’ sensitivity to hormone may change.
Functioning tumour - too much hormone secreted.
Non-functioning tumour - tumour destroys gland and too little hormone is secreted.
Where is the hypothalamus?
In the diencephalon, anterior to the midbrain.
Where is the pituitary gland?
It is a midline structure in the pituitary fossa of the sphenoid bone.
How is the pituitary gland connected to the hypothalamus?
By the infundibulum (pituitary stalk).
How is the pituitary gland divided (anatomically and physically)?
Anterior pituitary
Posterior pituitary
How do the hypothalamus and posterior pituitary work together?
Hypothalamic neurons pass down the infundibulum into posterior pituitary, they manufacture hormones which are transported to the posterior pituitary.
Which hormones are produced by hypothalamic neurons in the posterior pituitary?
Vasopressin (ADH)
Oxytocin
How are ADH and oxytocin transported from the hypothalamus to the posterior pituitary?
Along the axoplasm (cytoplasm of the axons) by axoplasmic transport.
How do the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary work together?
Hypothalamic neurons secrete releasing hormones and release-inhibitory hormones which either stimulate or repress the release of hormones by the anterior pituitary.
Which 6 hormones does the anterior pituitary release?
Growth Hormone (GH)
Prolactin
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone (ACTH)
Lutenising Hormone (LH)
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Describe the hypophyseal portal system.
Drains venous blood from the hypothalamus to anterior pituitary capillary beds.
Drains veins in the anterior pituitary to the hypophyseal veins (and eventually to the SVC).
What is a portal system?
A capillary bed which lies between two set of veins.
Which hormones does the thyroid gland produce?
Triiodothyronine (T3)
Thyroxine (T4)
Which element is required for the production of the thyroid hormones?
Iodine.
What is the role of the thyroid hormones?
Regulation of metabolism and stimulation of growth.
