ENDOCRINE Flashcards
Body control system composed of a group of glands that’s maintain a stable internal environment by producing chemical regulatory substances called hormones
Endocrine system
Tendency of the body to seek and maintain a condition of balance or equilibrium within its internal environment, even when faced with external changes
Homeostasis
A positive desirable form of stress that influences physical or physiological health
Eustress
A negative form of stress that influences physical or physiological health
Distress
A receptor protein on the surface of a cell or in its interior that binds to a specific hormone
Hormone receptors
Hormones circulate to all tissues but influences only certain cells due to presence of receptors on or in the cells
Target cell specificity
Organic compounds belonging to class of biochemicals called lipids, easily soluble in organic solvents, slightly soluble in water
Steroid
Small protein, between 10 - 100 amino acids
Polypeptides
Group of organic molecules, include fats, oils, and waxes; store energy, form parts of cell structures, such as cell membranes
Lipids
Small particles, present in large numbers in every cell, function to convert stored genetic info into protein molecules
Ribosomes
Increase in size of organ, due to increase in cell size. Commonly seen in actively stimulated muscle.
Hyper trophy
Steroid hormone, such as testosterone or androsterone, controls development and maintenance of masculine characteristics
Androgenic hormone
Natural steroid produced from cholesterol by adrenal glands
DHEA
Unsaturated steroidal derivative of androstene
Androstenediol
Unsaturated androgenic steroid, weaker than testosterone
Androstenedione
