Endocrine Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
Are ductless glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream through capillaries walls
What are the five glands in the endocrine
Pituitary gland
Thyroid gland
Parathyroid gland
Adrenal gland
Pancreas
What are endocrine gland
They do not have ducts they secrete the hormone directly into the blood stream
What are exocrine glands
Glands that secrete substances other than hormones into ducts that discharge their secretions into internal or external body surface eg sweat glands
What are the hormones the pituitary produced
Follicle stimulating hormone
Luteinising hormone
Adrenocorticotrophic hormone
Thyroid stimulating hormone
Growth hormone
Prolactin
Oxytocin
Antidiuretic hormone
Follicle stimulating hormone
Stimulates the ovary’s and testes to produce follicle containing I’ve and to produce sperm
LH hormone
Act on the ovary to cause ovulation
Stimulates sperm production
Adrenocorticotrophic hormone
Stimulates the adrenal gland to produce hormones to help with stress such as cortisol
Thyroid simulating hormone
Stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete thyroxine
Growth hormone
Acts on all tissue of the body stimulating growth and repair of cells
Prolactin
Stimulates the mammary glands to develop during pregnancy and stimulates milk production after birth
Oxytocin
Targets the uterus during birth causing contractions acts on the mammary gland tissue resulting in milk let down
Anti diuretic hormone
Acts in the kidneys to transport water to increase blood volume and blood pressure
What is negative feedback
Negative feedback mechanisms are used to keep hormone level in check
Self regulating mechanisms to prevent the excessive production of hormone
Thyroid gland
Secretes thyroxine which sets the lace for metabolism for the entire body
Parathyroid gland
Produced parathyroid hormone which is responsible for calcium and phosphorus regulation
Adrenal gland
Produce two differnt hormones glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids divided into two sections cortex and medulla
Adrenal cortex
Responsible for secreting cortisol and aldosterone released to help the body cope in stressful situstiond
Adrenal medulla
Produces adrenaline which increases heart rate and increases blood pressure
Dilates the airways and pupils
Ovary
Produce oestrogen and progesterone
Testis
Produces sperm and testosterone
Kidney
Produces erythropoietin to produced more blood cells but acting in the bone marrow to stimulate the production of
Endocrine pancreases
Produces insulin by the islet cells scattered within the pancreas it is directly released into the bloodstream in response to the increase in blood glucose that occurs after eating a meal
Insulin is the key to unlock cells which open the nearby glucose channels
