Endocarditis Flashcards
What is endocarditis?
This inflammation of endocardium
happens from bacterial infection
Usually theres valve damage which leads to thrombi and bacteria migrate there causing infection.
Sometimes it can be non-bacterial and be because of lupus ( auto immune disease)
How to diagnose infective endocarditis?
Positive blood culture
CT angiography
Treatment if endocarditis?
Prolonged antibiotics
Surgery( severe cases)
Prevention of endocarditis?
If someone is high risk antibiotics are given before hand.
What is cardiac tamponade?
Accumulation of fluid in pericardial space, causes compression of the heart chambers, which leads to decrease in venous return + filling in heart. Causing a reduced cardiac output.
Symptoms of cardiac tamponade?
Becks triad
- falling BP
- Rising JVP
- Muffeled heart sound
signs of endocarditis?
R - Roth spots
O - Osler nodes
J - Janeway lesions
S- Spinter Haemorrhages
