  • At uni
  • Got very thirsty and tired and needing to wee a lot
  • Luckily a friend was studying medicine and told me to got to a doctor!

Attitude to diabetes (5)

  • cope pretty well
  • can be boring at times but I deal with it ok
  • only a couple of hypos and only been in hospital once
  • go to annual GP check every year
  • see podiatrist to check feet and eye screening every year

Recent Diagnosis (4):

A
  • Moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy
  • blocked blood vessels, leaky blood vessels, and some blood vessels that aren’t normal
  • no new blood vessels forming
  • No immediate risk of losing sight, but need to monitoring and to better improve my diabetes

  • GCSE marks have changed and no-one knows what is good anymore, but the headmaster has been on my case

  • drinking one or two bottles of wine every weekend
  • blood sugar control has got a bit erratic

Result of stress/lifestyle - physiological (4)

  • HbA1C higher than usual (60mmol/mol versus upper-40s / lower 50s)
  • Blood pressure up (140/85 ve 120/80)
  • Weight gone up a few kilos
  • The practise nurse did comment on these things but I was really busy that day and didn’t really think about it. Normally you’re on top of the whole diabetes thing!

Hopes (2)

  • Hope to deal with the diabetes through the Mediterranean diet and
  • More exercise (currently I cycle to work every day)
