A system in which a rich and powerful country controls other countries, or a desire for control over other countries.

A alliance is when a country decides to go to war. The other countries that form the alliance would follow into battle.

A murder by sudden or secret attack often for political reasons.
Schlieffen plan
It was Germany’s plan to attack and defeat France by invading through Belgium, and then turning back to attack and defeat Russia in the East.
What were the main features of a trench in WW1?
Soldiers, machine guns, periscopes, sandbags, fire step platforms.
What was a typical soldiers diet?
Basic food included bread, meat, vegetables, tea, sugar, salt, tobacco, alcohol. Food was hard to supply and wasn’t supplied for days on end.
What was a soldier’s daily routine?
5am - “Stand to” (stand arm to arm) meaning to be on high alert in case of an attack
5:30am - Rum ration
6am - Stand for half an hour after daylight
7am - Breakfast (usually bacon and tea)
8am - Clean themselves, clean weapons, tidy trenches
5pm - Tea
6:30pm - Night shift
Describe no mans land
It was narrow, muddy, treeless stretch of land, characterised by numerous shell holes. Being in No man’s land was considered very dangerous since it offered little or no protection for soldiers
Who was Sir Douglas Haig?
He was the commandeer of the British army in France. He saw active service in Sudan and South Africa and became a recognised authority on cavalry warfare.
What was Sir Douglas Haig’s nickname?
The Butcher of the Somme.
What were his aims during the battle of the Somme?
The British army would drop a new type of shell to destroy the barbed wire and machine guns on the enemy line.

He managed to achieve to bombard the German trenches for 7 nights straight. Having a total of 1,508,652 shells.

When was the plan of attack?
On 24th June 1916, the British began a seven day bombardment. On July 1st the soldiers would climb above the trenches and attack the enemy line.
