Emotional intelligence 2: Flashcards

1
Q

How does the MSCEIT measure EI?

A
  • MSCEIT (Mayer-Salovery- Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test)
  • 8 ability measures (2 for each branch)
  • EMOTION PERCEPTION (faces + pictures e.g. pics of abstract art)
  • EMOTION FACILITATION (facilitation e.g. knowing which emotions are useful in certain situations + sensations e.g. how similar emotions are to particular physical sensations)
  • EMOTIONAL UNDERSTANDING (blends e.g. which blend of emotions describes a certain + progression e.g. “caroline felt depressed, more and more sad etc.” –> she felt despair/fear etc.)
  • EMOTION MANAGEMENT (management ie. self + relations e.g, others)

Q

What are some alternative approaches to emotion perception/recognition tests?

A
  • Emotion perception was originally thought of as separate to EI.
  • DANVA (Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Accuracy): faces, voices, postures using pictures
  • Multimodal Emotion Recognition Test (MERT) and Geneva Recognition Test (GERT): uses dynamic stimuli –>
  • Japanese & Caucasian Affect Recognition Test (JACBART): each item has a neutral face as forwards/backwards
  • Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test

Q

What are some issues with test characteristics for EI tests?

A

-can be issues with difficulty:
reduced variability= reduced reliability, reduced correlations.
- question of how well these resemble “real-life” emotional tasks?
- is the PROCESS assessed by the task (e.g. inspection time) more pertinent than the CONTENT (i.e. emotions)?

Q

What are some ways to deal with this?

A
  • limit the viewing time
  • make the facial expressions very subtle
  • give partial information (e.g. eyes only)

Q

Does the MSCEIT and other measures of EMOTION PERCEPTION correlate?

A
  • the MSCEIT Emotion perception do not correlate with the JACBART or the voices (MERT)
  • this could suggest that the JACBART is more a mental speed ability test
  • the DANVA faces paradigm does correlate with the MSCEIT Emotion Perception (small)

Q

What is an alternative approach to an Ability Based EI test to the MSCEIT?

A

The Situational Test of Emotional Understanding (STEU):

  • based on Roseman’s appraisal theory of emotion (automatic appraisal of your environment)
  • i.e. emotions are based on the appraisal of 7 different states (situational state, motivational state, causal agency, expectedness, certainy, control potential, problem type).
    e. g. an unwanted situation stops. The person involved is most likely to feel? a) regret, b) hope
  • put into personal and work life

Q

What are the correlations with the MSCEIT and STEU/STEM?

A
  • both the STEU + STEM correlate highly with the MSCEIT, particularly on the Emotion Understand facet (.61 and .45 respectively)
  • the STEM correlates highest with the Emotion Understanding facet rather than the Emotion Management part, however could be related to methodological differences (both are in multiple choice format)

Q

What are two forms of evidence that EI is a distinct form of intelligence?

A

Evidence from correlations with other variables:

  • POSITIVE MANIFOLD (i.e. positive correlations with other tests of intelligence)–> i.e. is it a cognitive ability?
  • emergence as a DISTINCT GROUP FACTOR (i.e. higher correlations among EI components than between EI and other components)
