Emotion Science: chapter 3 Flashcards
Drive Reduction Theory:
This theory proposes that behavior is motivated by the need to reduce physiological drives, such as hunger and thirst.
Incentive Theory
This theory proposes that behavior is motivated by the anticipation of positive outcomes or rewards.
Self-Determination Theory:
This theory proposes that behavior is motivated by intrinsic factors, such as autonomy, competence, and relatedness, rather than extrinsic factors like rewards or punishments.
Affective Forecasting Theory:
This theory proposes that emotions play a key role in decision-making by helping individuals to anticipate and evaluate potential outcomes.
Somatic Marker Hypothesis:
This theory proposes that emotions are essential for rational decision-making, as they provide somatic (bodily) markers that guide behavior and inform decision-making.
Dual-Process Theory:
his theory proposes that decision-making involves both intuitive, automatic processes and deliberate, reflective processes.
Cognitive reappraisal
The process of changing the way one thinks about a situation to regulate one’s emotional response.
Emotional reappraisal
The process of changing the meaning of an emotional stimulus to regulate one’s emotional response.
Default mode network
A network of brain regions involved in self-reflection and mind-wandering.
Nucleus accumbens
A structure in the brain that is part of the striatum and is involved in the processing of reward.
Ventral tegmental area (VTA)
A group of neurons in the midbrain involved in the regulation of reward and motivation. It produces dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is associated with pleasure and positive reinforcemen
Insula
A region of the brain involved in interoception, or the awareness of bodily sensations. It plays a role in the experience of emotions and in the regulation of autonomic responses, such as heart rate and respiration.
Striatum:
A group of structures in the brain involved in reward processing and motivation. It plays a key role in the formation of habits and the learning of new behaviors based on positive outcomes.
