Emergency Oxygen Administration Flashcards
Define Hypo and Hyperventilation in Adults, Children, and Infants
- Adults 20 breaths per minute
- Children 30 breaths per minute
- Infants 50 breaths per minute
When do you apply Emergency Oxygen
- Situations of Hypo or Hyperventilation
- When person is not breathing
What do you need to apply emergency Oxygen
- Oxygen Cylinder
- Pressure regulator with flowmeter
- Delivery Device
What is the difference between variable and fixed flow rate systems
- Variable allows adjustment of flow rate, fixed does not and is usually set to 15 liters per minute
- Variable must be assembled, fixed are all pre-connected ready to go
Describe Flow Rate, Oxygen concentration, and uses for Nasal Cannula
- Flow Rate: 1-6 Liters per minute
- Oxygen concenration: 24-44%
- Uses: Victims with breathing difficulty or who are unable to tolerate other masks
Describe Flow Rate, Oxygen concentration, and uses for Resuscitation mask with Oxygen inlet
- Flow Rate: 6-15 LPM
- Oxygen Concentration: 33-55%
- Uses: Victims with breathing difficulty or who are not breathing
Describe Flow Rate, Oxygen concentration, and uses for Non Rebreather mask
- Flow Rate: 10-15 LPM
- Oxygen Concentration: Up to 90%
- Uses: For breathing victims only, cant use in someone who is not breathing
Describe Flow Rate, Oxygen concentration, and uses for Bag Valve mask
- Flow Rate: 15 LPM or higher
- Oxygen concentration: 90% or more
- Victims with difficulty breathing or who are not breathing
When assembling the Oxygen tank, what are some considerations to ensure effectiveness
- Tank needs more than 200 PSI
- Should lay tank on side during use
- Make sure oxygen is flowing prior to administering
What is the “blow by” technique when administering oxygen
- Best for young children and infants especially if frightened by mask
- Should hold the mask 2 inches from face, wave slowly from side to side, instruct patient to breath normally
