Emergency notes Flashcards
Main emergencies on farm
- grass staggers
- difficult calving
- prolapse
- toxic mastitis
- bloated calf
Grass staggers tx
- red bottle calcium topped up with magnesium
Use of antibiotics for toxic mastitis
- not needed
Use of hypertonic saline in ruminants
- more efficient
- would need lots of Hartmanns to have the same effect
Ddx for aggressive cows
- BSE
- grass staggers
- nervous ketosis
How to confirm the death of grass staggers was not sudden
- paddling e.g. churned up soil
- sudden death shows no sign of paddling
Another term for prolapse
- pushing the calving the bed out
Should you remove the membranes off a prolapse before replacing it?
- if they come easily
How to reduce oedema & inflammation of a prolapsed uterus. Why can this be a problem?
- sugar
– ideal environment for bacteria
Suture used in prolapsed cases
- Buhner
When to suture prolapses in
- pre-calving or lambing in vaginal prolapse
Risk of giving calcium IV to all down cows
- dampens down PTH response so cow seems much better but then crashes once the administered calcium runs out
Bacteria most commonly associated with toxic mastitis
- E.coli
- klebsiella
Main tx for toxic mastitis
- hypertonic saline
What should you always follow up hypertonic saline with?
- oral rehydration / isotonic solution
Common times for toxic mastitis to occur
- in & around milking
- between milking
- during dry period
- around calving time
- following intramammary tube administration
What part of the bacteria are endotoxins released from?
- the cell wall
Tx for toxic mastitis
- hypertonic saline
- NSAIDs
- oxytocin & regular stripping
- glucocorticoids to further reduce inflammation
