Anaesthetic & analgesic regime for castration

Anaesthetic regime

Answer 1

• Intra-testicular and scrotal procaine for local block – can do but can be painful.
• Xylazine for sedation (IM)
• Local into the spermatic cord – not a lot of communication between both sides so have to go into each side
• Also bleb both sides under the skin where the incision will be made.

Question 2

Analgesic regime

Answer 2

• SC meloxicam
• Red tractor requests it along with disbudding.

Question 3

Antibiotic use

Answer 3

• Dry normal day – no ABs.
• If going back into shed which is dirty then prophylactic ABs given as chance of infection in that environment is high.
• Try to persuade farmer to put them out in field so don’t need to use ABs. - Flystrike risk at time of year – fly deterrent useful
