Elevator Response Guideline
Rules for Elevator Safety during working incidents
8 Items
— Never take elevator to fire floor
— Never pass the fire floor unless in a blind hoist way at the fire floor level
— Only ascend in an elevator while operating in Phase II or independent service
— Travel 5 floors below reported fire floor to ensure elevator is working properly
— Never use elevator in a multiple hoist way during major fires unless all cars are under control of fire department
— Always carry appropriate FE tools, Flashlight and a radio
— Do not overload car
— Remember firefighter recall button is not fool proof and can be affected by smoke, fire, water
Elevator Response Guideline
Suppression Companies shall request a rescue company and elevator mechanic if any of the following circumstances exist

— Top hatch needs to be accessed
— Injuries have occurred
— Elevator car falls
— Blind shaft elevators
— Damaged or leaking elevator equipment

What is PHASE I elevator operation and how do you initiate it?
Recalls all elevators in that bank to return to the pre-determined level (recall floor) and deactivates them
Can be automatically by the building alarm system. One or more smoke detectors in elevator lobbies or machine rooms are activated
Manually by the Key-Switch. The manual phase 1 switch may be located in the buildings fire command center (FCC) in the main elevator lobby or in both locations.

Phase II Operations
— Key in the on position gives the operator full control of the elevator.
— They will have to press the desired floor button then hold the door close button until the doors completely close or vice versa.
— If the door close button is released prior to the doors closing, the doors will open back up and the same goes for when operating the door open button.
— This is advantageous when arriving at a floor and wanting to check for smoke/heat/fire
