Elements of Life : Bonding Flashcards
When does ionic bonding occur
Between a metal + non metal
Eg. LiCl , Na2O
What does ionic bonding involve
Transfer of electrons
When does covalent bonding occur
Between 2 non- metals
Eg. O2 , PBr3
What does covalent bonding require
Shared pair of electrons
At least one from each atom
Definition of dative covalent bonding
Unequal sharing of electrons
One atom donates both electrons
Eg. NH4 +
When drawing a dative covalent bond dot cross diagram what must one include
An arrow from the atom donating two electrons
Definition of metallic bonding
Positive cations surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons
Definition of ionic bonding
Electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions
Describe cations and anions in terms of there size
Cations = small = looses electrons = loose a shell
Anions = big = gain electrons = don’t loose a shell
Describe strength of ionic bonding and what it depends on ( 2 )
- Greater charge on ion = stronger ionic bonding
2. Smaller ions = stronger ionic bonding
When do ions get bigger
As you go down the group
What effects strength of metallic bond ( 3 )
- Smaller metal ion = stronger
- Greater charge = stronger
- More delocalised electrons = stronger
