Elements from the sea: Redox Flashcards
Definition of OIL RIG
Oxidation
Is
Loss of electrons
Reduction
Is
Gain of electrons
What is the other definition of oxidation
Gain of energy oxygen
What is another definition for reduction
Loss of oxygen
What is the oxidising agent
The compound which gets reduced
What is the reducing agent
The compound which gets oxidised
What is the range of oxidation numbers
Give example
The difference between the maximum number of electrons it can lose and the maximum number of electrons it can gain
Eg. N = +5 to -3
What is the oxidation state of an uncombined element or elements in standard states and why
0
Because elements in standard states do not lose all gain electrons
Eg. Zn, O2 , N2
How do you work out oxidation states of elements and simple ions
The charge on the iron is the oxidation state or number
What happens to an oxidation number when the element is oxidised
Oxidation number increases
What happens to the oxidation number when an element is reduced
The oxidation number decreases
Oxidation state/ number of P in P4 O10
= 5
4P + (-2x 10) = 0
4P- 20 = 0
4P = 20
P = 5
Definition of redox reaction/ equation
Made up of 2 half equations
1= electrons lost ( oxidation )
2= electrons gained ( reduction )
In an oxidation half equation which side do the electrons go on
RHS
In an reduction half equation which side do the electrons go on
LHS
How to balance redox equations ( 4 steps )
- Check oxidation states
- Are no. electrons lost or gained the same - if not balance them
- Balance rest of equation
- Check charges balance on both sides of equation
( check sheet for further examples )
