Developing Fuels: Isomerism Flashcards
What are 2 types of isomerism
- Structural Isomerism
2. Stereoisomerism
Definition of structural isomerism
Molecules with the same molecular formula but different structural formula
Names the 3 types of structural isomerism
- Chain isomers
- Position isomers
- Functional group isomers
Definition of chain isomer
Caused by having a different carbon chain
Definition of position isomer
Caused by the functional group being in a different position
Definition of functional group isomer
Caused my having a different functional group
Examples of functional group isomers
- Alkenes & cycloalkanes
eg. but-2-ene & cyclobutane - Alcohols and ethers
eg. propan-2-ol & methoxyethane
Definition of stereoisomers
Molecules with same structural formula but a different spatial arrangement of atoms
Explain why E / Z isomerism is shown in some alkenes
Restricted rotation of bond
Because different groups are attached to the C=C bond
Describe a Z stereo isomer
2 same groups in the top
Describe a E stereo isomer
2 same groups diagonal to each other
