Electromyography Flashcards
electromyography
recording the electrical stimulus (input) from the nerve into the muscle
-measures neural activity
-amount of activation and timing of activation
-no pattern
Types of EMG electrodes
-cabled system
-wireless/telemetric system
-fine wire electrodes
Myalgia
muscle pain from any disorder
myopathy
any disease of muscle
strain
tearing of a muscle
sarcopenia
the wasting of muscle tissue and decrease in strength associated with aging
cachexia
the wasting of muscle tissue associated with disease
cramps
moderate to severe muscle spasms and pain
-electrolyte imbalances, Ca and Mg deficiecies or dehydration
DOMS
pain and swelling 24-72 hours after strenuous exercise related to microtearing
Contusion
muscle bruises caused by compressive forces sustained during impacts
myositis ossificans
calcifications of muscle tissue caused by repeated or serious contusions
(rest)
Rhabdomyolysis
casued by crushing or extremely destructive exercise
-myoglobin pours into bloodstream
Muscular dystrophy
hereditary
-muscle lacks dystrophin
-weak sarcolemma
-no known cure
Duchenne’s
most common type of muscular dystophy
-mainly in males
-rarely live past 20
myotonic
onset between birth and 60
-slow
-muscle spasms, weakness, and heart arrythymia
