Coordination Flashcards
agonists
muscles directly responsible for producing a movement
-prime movers: large impact
Assistant: only help when needed
Synergists: muscles that work together
concentric
antagonist (breaks)
role played by muscle acting to slow or stop a movement
-relaxed at start, most active to slow movement at the end of the movement
-Eccentric contraction
Stabilizer
role played by a muscle acting to stabilize a body part against some other force
-act mostly isometrically to contract gravity and inertia of movement
neutralizer
role played acting to eliminate an unwanted action produced by an agonist
-when a muscle does more than 1 action, this counteracts the unwanted action (isometric)
Two joint/ multi joint muscles
purpose: to efficiently transfer energy to non-adjacent segments during powerful actions
disadvantages: active and passive insufficiency
active insufficiency
limited ability of a multi-joint muscle to produce force when the joint places the muscle on slack
passive insufficiency
inability of a two joint muscle to stretch to the extent required to allow full range of motion at all joints crossed
