EEI 10/23d Application of Mechanical Principles Lab Flashcards
difference between men, women, and children patellar tendons?
no difference between men and women (adults) OR between girls and boys
BUT difference between adults and peds
what happens to patellar tendon stiffness as you age?
stiffness and size increase
if a patellar tendon increases in size and stiffness, what is expected to occur?
less damage to ligaments
more damage to tendon, greater ability to tear
what happens to collagen in patellar tendons as you age?
the properties change and the microstructure changes, thus there may be a greater likelihood of tears
what is a theory on why children don’t tear patellar tendon as often as adults?
Children store more energy so they will have the ability to release more energy during activities, thus yielding the decrease in injury
what is the importance of viscoelasticity in ligaments
it shows the amount the ligament is able to stretch
when does a ligament tear or deform faster?
when the force is fast and hard
when does the ligament deform or stretch out
with slow, repetitive overuse
why was it challenging to get some of the ultimate stresses of the ligaments of the ankle?
because the force generated broke/fractured the bone before the ultimate was generated
what causes the most ACL strain?
dynamic valgus strain
does the ACL take more strain than MCL in dynamic valgus?
Yes - because the fiber orientation
when is the most strain generated in the ACL?
multi-planar
