Edward Jenner Flashcards
What method was used to prevent small pox during the 1700s
Inoculation
Why did Jenner disagree with the method of inoculation
Went through it himself at age 6
Wasn’t very effective and many people would die
Who did Edward Jenner discover weren’t effected as badly with small pox
A milkmaid who had previously had cow pox
What was Edward jenners theory
People who had had cow pox weren’t as badly effected by small pox
How did Edward Jenner test his theory
Injected 8 yr old James Phipps with cowpox
6 weeks later he injected him with a dose of small pox and he wasn’t effected
What did Jenner do after he’d proved his theory
Tested on 23 other people
Wrote up his findings and submitted them to the royal society for publication in 1798
Why did the royal society not publish Edward’s findings
He had no real scientific proof and had only tested it on 23 people which wasn’t a big enough sample
What did Jenner do j stead of having his work published by the royal society
Paid and published his own findings and his book was widely read and distributed
Reasons for Edward to have opposition
Attitudes
Institutions
Science and technology
Why did people oppose against Jenner due to his background
People didn’t want to trust the words of a lowly countryside doctor
Thought his lack of scientific knowledge and reputation made his work irrelevant
Didn’t want to believe him because it didn’t make sense to them
Why did institutions cause opposition against Jenner
Was initially refused by the royal society to publish his work
Opposed by the innoculators who had made fortunes selling solution and now Jenner was stealing their work, patients and money
Church spread the idea that small pox was a punishment from God and the cure was to lead a pure life and pray
Why did science and technology cause people to oppose Jenner
Germs hadn’t been discovered yet so nobody understood why the vaccination worked and so they didn’t want to use it
Why did some vaccinations cause worse problems
Some tools used for vaccinations were dirty or the vaccination was contaminated
When were vaccinations made mandatory and when was it enforced
1852 - mandatory
1872 - enforced
