Developments during the war Flashcards
Plastic surgery
By the end of the war people all over Europe were using skin grafts to repair the body
X-ray machines
Mobile x ray machines used for the first time during ww1
Helped identify wounds, led to quicker surgery
Blood transfusions
Sodium citrate stopped blood from clotting when it was stored
Refrigerating blood meant that it could be stored before large scale attacks
A portable machine was made for transporting blood
Thomas splint
Pulled bones apart so won’t grind and sets them back into place
Brain surgery
Blood transfusions and saline solutions on a drip prevented the brain from going into shock and dying
And X-rays meant that fragments could be removed from the brain
Treating infections
Tubes of aseptic solutions were piped into wounds to stop infection
Fragments , dirty tissues and dead muscle removed before sewing so not to trap in any infection
