Blood transfusions
1901 Karl Landsteiner found blood groups for the first time
Blood transfusions could now be used when people suffered serious injuries and was used in wars
Gene theory
With the discovery of dna by crick and Watson scientists made a link between genetics and certain diseases such as cystic fibrosis
New gene therapy takes normal genes from embryos to correct the genes
Plastic surgery
Ww1 led to major developments in plastic surgery as soldiers were injured by shrapnel explosions
Who does the NHS now supply plastic surgery to
Burn victims, marks left by the removal of cancer tissue and certain defects
Not cosmetic surgery
Transplant surgeries
Used when an organ failed and is often taken from dead bodies although people can donate kidneys whilst still alive
Dentists
Radically changed oral hygiene as is free at point of access but patients have to pay for checkups and fillings
Dialysis
Machines used to keep patients with kidney problems alive
Works as a replacement kidney by filtering waste out of the blood
Chemotherapy
Following Marie curies work on X-rays she developed more used for radioactive elements such as radium
Found these elements could damage cancer cells through radiotherapy and chemotherapy
But can also damage other cells
Keyhole surgery
Surgeons can perform surgery through small incisions and cameras are insterted
Heart pace makers
Help regulate the heart after a heart attack
Sends electrical pulses to the heart to keep it beating
GPs
Access means that people who couldn’t afford to see doctors before can now access medical care and treatment
