EDUCATION - What are the consequences of Labelling? Flashcards
What does Setting mean?
This is where students are placed in different classes or sets based on their ability, for different subjects (such as maths and English).
What does Streaming mean?
This is where students are split into several different hierarchical groups, and they would stay together for all of their lessons.
What does Banding mean?
This is where students are put into broad ability bands = This was often used to ensure that each school in an area had pupils that represented in a reasonable balance of each ability level!
What are 4 consequences of labelling?
- Fatalism
- Self-fulfilling prophecy / self-refuting prophecy
- Peer pressure from mates (subculture)
- ‘Sink sets’ = Groups of underachieving kids begin to group together and fall together
Why do Gillborn and Youdell argue that streaming happens? HINT: A-C economy
The A-C economy takes place when teachers focus all their time, effort and resources on pupils who are likely to get their 5A*-C grades, in order to boost the school’s positioning in the league tables. This means that teachers do not focus on the children who are failing or have 5E’s!
What is ‘Educational triage’?
This is where students are sorted into groups; these groups are organised between students who can be ‘saved’ and those who ‘can’t’ be saved = The latter of the 2 are ignored and the former are focused on by the teachers!
What is ‘Differentiation’?
The process of teachers categorising pupils, according to how they personally perceive their ability, attitude and behaviour. EG = Middle-class students are perceived more positively then lower-class students!
What is ‘Polarisation’?
The process where pupils respond to streaming by moving to two different ‘poles’ or extreme = Lacey identified that these are the pro-school and anti-school subcultures!
What does Jo Boaler say about schools? HINT: Prisons
She says that schools are ‘psychological prisons’!
TRUE OR FALSE: Boaler says that social class DOES influence setting decisions made by teachers!
TRUE = More working-class students are allocated to lower sets in schools!
