EDUCATION - Postmodernism Views Flashcards
Controversially, what do Post-Modern perspectives believe (in comparison to every other theory)?
They deny that there is a single, best way of tackling the problems within the education system.
They see societies as developing greater variety and pluralism, and they question whether any ‘planned’ approach to education and dealing with other issues is desirable and needed for post-modern society.
Give an example within the education system of greater choice and diversity.
Education for adults –> The Open University: Learners can mix a combination of courses to suit their own goals and their lifestyle.
Describe how adult education is typical of a post-modern society.
There is a blurring of boundaries between different areas of life (such as the blurring of lines between leisure and work), greater variety and choice and the rejection of any imposed or forced plan onto people and their lives.
Why are Post-Modern views often criticised?
They are often criticised for exaggerating the changes in education.
What 2 things do some sociologists point out regarding the education system?
Haralambos and Holborn suggest that there is actually a lot of centralisation within some aspects of the education system, such as the national curriculum, rather than there being diversity and choice.
Furthermore, the budget for adult education has been cut, such as the cutting down of the range and type of evening classes available for adult students.
How else are Postmodernists criticised? HINT: Ignorance of macro structures
They ignore the influence in which the education system has been shaped more by big businesses and industries than it had by the needs and wishes of individuals.
