What does Bourdieu believe the main role of education is?
SOCIAL REPRODUCTION
What does Social Reproduction mean?
It means reproducing children into working-class jobs!
What are the 4 types of capital that Bourdieu identified?
- Economic
- Cultural
- Social
- Symbolic
What is Economic capital?
Wealth and Money - This can be passed on through generations!
What is Cultural capital?
Educational qualifications and knowledge that can be used to make SOCIAL CONTACTS! Expensive tastes (which demonstrates high cultural capital and high culture) lead to education success!
What is Social capital?
Social connections and contacts (NEPOTISM), which can be useful when finding a job or an employer!
What is Symbolic capital?
This is linked to status = This means creating an honourable image of yourself, in order to make sure you get a good job and you get paid more!

Give an example of how economic capital and social capital can link with each other!
Economic capital can be gained by having good social connections = By having good social contacts, you are much more likely to get a well-paying job = This can be seen with the Old Boys’ Network!
How does the Old Boys’ Network legitimise social reproduction?
The ruling class (the bourgeoisie) get the best jobs, and this Network makes it seem fair (the ‘myth of meritocracy’).
What is Bourdieu’s work called?
‘Class as Culture (1979)’
What does ‘Taste’ mean?
How we judge other people (such as how they dress and present themselves).
What does ‘Habitus’ mean?
Ways of living and cultural frameworks, which can identify our own tastes!
What is one negative evaluating point regarding Bourdieu’s work? HINT: Deterministic and ignores other institutions
Bourdieu’s view is very deterministic and it ignores the importance of other social institutions (such as the government), which helps to shape social class in society!
What is one positive evaluating point regarding Bourdieu’s work? HINT: Rich people get better jobs
