Define “Development”
The economic, social or political progress a country or people make.
State what is meant by “Economic development”
Improvements in a country’s or people’s employment, income and living standards.
State what is meant by “Social development”
Improvement in people’s quality of life, health, education and culture
State what is meant by “Political development”
Improvements in a country’s system of government or the involvement of people, for example through greater democracy or freedom of speech.
State what is meant by the “development gap”
The difference in levels of development between the wealthiest developed countries and the poorest developing countries
State what is meant by GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
The total value of goods and services produced by a country in 1 year.
State the 4 things that HDI measures.
GDP per capita, life expectancy, literacy rate and years of schooling.
Define “literacy rate”
The percentage of the population, aged over 15, who can read and write.
Define birth rate
The number of live births per 1000 people per year.
Define death rate
The number of deaths per 1000 people per year.
Define life expectancy
The average number of years a person can expect to live.
Define population structure
The age-sex distribution in a country, shown by population pyramids.
