What is meant by an amino acid?
Amino acids make up protein molecules; when protein is digested the body breaks it up into individual amino acids
Define “essential amino acids”
Amino acids that cannot be made naturally by the body
Define a high biological value (HBV) food
A food that contains all essential amino acids
Define a low biological value (LBV) food
A food that is missing 1 or more of the essential amino acids

Explain the effects of a protein excess in the body.
Protein contains nitrogen which needs to be removed from the body via urine. If there is an excess of nitrogen this puts stress on the kidneys leading to conditions like kidney failure
