Why do we have social segregation?
- Housing- developers + builders build with an income group in mind (market)
- Gentrification- neighbour hoods change over time, poor areas are gentrified
- Ethnic dimension- cultural diversity
How is urban deprivation measured?
Index of multiple deprivation is measured in 7 ways:

7. Barriers to housing + services
Solutions to inequality
- increase in affordable housing
- increase in the living wage
- better quality education
- better public transport
- better environmental standards
Effects of inequality
- disparity (differences) in water supply
- lack of services
- poor- live in crowded areas with poor accommodation
- health, education, unemployment
- cycle of poverty- lack of social mobility

* problems/inequalities are bigger than HICs due to rapid urban growth
* favelas/squatter settlements provide inadequate shelter
* lots of people work in the informal economy, living wage cant be established by government
* migration has increased the existence of a variety of cultural/ ethnic groups
* lack of sanitation- toilets on street, open sewers
* lack of clean water- limited supply, + long queues
* lack of legal rights- no security, crime
* poor health, low life expectancy
* unemployment + poor quality work
