Near places
places that feels like home where people live in a similar way that we do
* e.g. forming our national identity as a country
* perception is formed as an insider
* could refer to the geographical distance or emotional connection to a place
Far places
places we see as foreign, alien, exotic or different. There is a ‘them’ and ‘us’ division
* e.g racist ideologies can develop such as ‘whinging poms’ a term used by Australians to mock the English
* perception is formed as an outsider
* could refer to the geographical distance or emotional connection to a place
Experienced places
places that we have visited and developed our own sense of place
* places you visit (frequently)
* perception is formed by people experiencing a place to gain an authentic sense of place
Media places
places that we have formed a perception of based on what we have seen in the media
* could be in the form of images, brochures, books, newspapers, films, videos or websites
* wide spread of social media has allowed us to visit places without physically being there
Digital, virtual, & Augmented places
- Augmented places use digital information overlayed on top of real-life imagery e.g through the camera of a phone
- Digital/virtual places have allowed far places to become more tangible due to the rise in technology
