✓ Economic Implications (AO3) Flashcards
What are economic implications?
psychological research/theories often have far-reaching effects
e.g. psychological interventions used to treat mental illness could enable someone to go back to work after a period of absence
Economic implications in Social influence?
:) normative social influence means we will be more likely to conform & have a job as it is the norm
- helps the economy
Economic implications in Memory?
:) more efficient use of public money
- e.g. research showing the cognitive interview facilitates accuracy of eyewitness reporting enables better use of police time & resources
Economic implications in Attachment?
:) research into the role of the father suggests both m&f are equally capable of lookinf after the child = mothers can go back to work & contribute to the economy sooner
:( more fathers may stay at home so contribute less to the economy
:( B’s early work suggested infants shouldn’t be separated from their mothers = this means mothers would not return to work & contribute to the economy
Economic implications in Biopsychology?
:) night shift work e.g. research into EPs & EZs helps to develop areas which are making shift work more productive
Economic implications in Approaches?
:) token economy system - good behaviour = rewards
:( behavioural issues - after prison no rewards for good behaviour = relapse
Economic implications in Issues & debates?
:) can develop treatments - nature, doesn’t cost NHS facilities money & nurture, CBT & therapies
Economic implications in Cognition & development?
:) increasing productivity e.g. Piaget’s & Vygotsky’s research on teaching methods - theories into optimum development impact education/curriculum/different ages
= if research is applied effectively & applied properly will help ppl to develop into individuals who will work hard & make more money for the economy
Economic implications in Schizophrenia?
:) anti-psychotic drugs are beneficial to lots w Sz
:( if drugs don’t work expensive to fund mental health wards
Economic implications in Forensic psychology?
:) econ benefits relating to the cost & effectiveness of treatments/custodial sentencing/alternatives to custodial sentencing
- if research shows that custodial sentence does not necessarily result in lowering of recidivism rates then perhaps it would be more economical to focus on alternatives such as restorative justice
Economic implications in Psychopathology?
:) if research shows that ppl with a disorder such as depression are less likely to suffer a relapse after cognitive therapy then, even tho cognitive therapy might be initially more expensive than drug therapy , in the long-term it might be more economically sound to offer cognitive therapy as ppl would have less time off work
