Ecological Relationships And Energy Flow Flashcards
What are plants?
Plants are multicellular organisms with cellulose cell walls. They contain chlorophyll and produce food by photosynthesis.
List the three main plant groups.
๐ Bryophyte a (mosses)
๐ Pteridophytes (ferns)
๐ Spermatophytes (flowering plants)
What are animals?
Animals are multicellular organism is that feed on organic material as they do not possess the ability to make their own.
What are viruses?
Viruses are a very complex group that donโt really fit in to any part of the kingdom system. They can only live inside other cells and they do not show any of the characteristics of living things (Mrs GREN).
What is a species?
A species is a group of organisms, with shared features, which can breed together to produce fertile offspring.
What are the four phases of the population growth curve?
Lag phase
Exponential growth phase
Plateau are stationary phase
Decline phase
When a food supply is readily available what tends to happen to the population?
It usually grows rapidly.
How can the change in population be represented mathematically?
(birth rate + immigration) - (death rate + emigration)
This three reasons why human population is increasing rapidly.
๐ Increase in food supply in many parts of the world
๐ Improvement and sanitation which reduces illness and death due to infection
๐ Improvements in medical care such as the development of vaccines and antibiotics
List five things that can speed up the decomposition process.
๐ Warm temperature
๐ Adequate moisture
๐ Neutral PH
๐ Loose material that lets in oxygen for aerobic respiration
๐ Large surface area for microbes to work on
What do biologist look for when classifying organisms?
Biologists look for important features which are shared by as large a group as possible when classifying organisms.
What are some of the effects of global warming?
๐ Climate change - more weather extremes such as droughts and severe storms
๐ Polar ice caps melt
๐ Increased flooding
๐ More land becomes desert (desertification)
What can be done to reduce global warming?
๐ Plant more trees
๐ Reduce deforestation
๐ Burn less fossil fuel by becoming more energy for efficient and using alternative energy sources
Plants require a number of mineral ions to function properly and stay healthy. What are the three most important minerals?
๐ Nitrate - these are required as a source of nitrogen to make amino acid. The amino acids are converted into proteins for growth.
๐ Calcium - this is required to make cellulose, an important component of plant cell walls.
๐ Magnesium - this is required to make chlorophyll.
